The winning candidate, Willie Rennie
The Liberal Democrats have scored a sensational victory in the Dunfermline and West Fife by-election, dramatically overturning an 11,562 majority to win a seat from Labour in their heartland. If the huge 16% swing achieved by the Liberal Democrats from Labour was repeated here in Ealing, the Lib Dems would win all three local constituencies - Ealing Southall, Ealing Acton & Shepherds Bush and Ealing North.
Chief Whip of Ealing Liberal Democrats, Cllr Jon Ball, warmly congratulated Willie Rennie, the new Lib Dem MP for Dunfermline and West Fife. Jon Ball said, "This result has proved that the Liberal Democrats are the clear challengers to Labour in their heartlands and that our message that we want a fairer, greener and more democratic society is one that wins widespread appeal. Labour has lost the confidence of people who supported them for generations and in the Tories' first real electoral test under David Cameron, they were humiliated in fourth place."
Jon, who helped in the campaign by telephoning Dunfermline voters from London added that, "This fantastic result shows that where Liberal Democrats work hard, we can win any seat in the country. Gordon Brown lives in the constituency, so now he has a Liberal Democrat MP! In May's local elections here in Ealing, we are challenging both Labour and the Tories and this result shows that if we work hard and get our message across, we stand to make major gains from both the old parties."
