Ealing Liberal Democrats today welcomed the announcement from the Mayor of London that, on the assumption of a positive government decision on the construction of Crossrail, the Mayor will drop plans for the West London Tram Scheme. Ealing Lib Dems, who have consistently opposed the tram, are pleased that the Mayor has finally accepted their proposals to support Crossrail and a bus-based solution to address the problem of improving public transport on the Uxbridge Road, between Uxbridge and Shepherd's Bush instead of the intended tram.

Ealing Liberal Democrats have always maintained that Crossrail, the proposed high-frequency railway across Central London, will significantly improve public transport capacity in the area reducing the need for a tram and making a bus solution more practical. Crossrail stations are planned for Southall, Hanwell, West Ealing, Ealing Broadway, and at Acton, which will ease the pressure currently placed on the existing transport network, and provide the residents of West London with a high speed link into the West End, The City, and the Docklands.

Commenting on the news, Ealing Southall Liberal Democrat campaigner, Nigel Bakhai said: "This is a great victory for the residents of Ealing in their long battle with the Mayor of London over the West London Tram scheme. The Liberal Democrats are glad that we have been able to play our part in forcing the Mayor to listen to reason and that he has finally come round to supporting our proposals for Crossrail and a bus-based solution instead."
