Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg MP
The Liberal Democrats have had a huge surge in support across the country following the recent Leaders debate- with one poll suggesting the party had taken the lead in a General Election campaign.
Recent polls suggest that the impact of Nick Clegg's widely-praised performance in Thursday's historic first prime ministerial debate is already having a dramatic effect in boosting support for the Liberal Democrats.
Research by BPIX for Mail on Sunday put the Lib Dems on 32% - a bounce of 12% over the past week. The Tories were down seven points on 31%, while Labour dropped three to 28%.
Ealing Southall Lib Dem parliamentary candidate Nigel Bakhai said: "The only poll which counts is on May 6th so we can't take anything for granted. However, it is obvious that the more people see and hear about Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats, the more they seem to like it."
Over nine million viewers watched the first of three TV debates between the party leaders during the General Election campaign, and most political commentators are giving it as a big victory for Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats.
A COMRES / ITV news poll of 4,000 people carried out straight after the broadcast gave Clegg 43% of the vote when it came to who viewers thought performed best compared with David Cameron on 26% and Gordon Brown trailing behind on 20%.
Further polls by YouGov, Channel 4, Guardian, Daily Mail, The Times and Angus Reid polls all scored Nick Clegg as the clear winner and one poll by LBC Radio gave Nick Clegg a resounding 56% share of the vote.
