Elthorne Lib Dem Dave Randles is concerned about parking proposals on the new Green Man Lane estate in West Ealing

Elthorne Liberal Democrat Focus Team's Dave Randles has uncovered plans that the Tory-run Ealing Council is planning to sell 100 car parking spaces at £10,000 each on the new Green Man Lane estate in West Ealing once it is built.

If the proposals go ahead, Ealing Council is planning to build 721 homes on the new estate with 321 general car parking spaces, including 100 of which that will be sold at £10,000 each and would therefore be unavailable to most ordinary people living on the estate. Deducting these hundred spaces leaves a total of 221 "ordinary" residents spaces shared between the remaining 621 residential units which means only 1 in 3 properties would probably secure a parking space. The plans are also based on current parking usage and therefore take no account of any additional demand due to the shift in emphasis from single occupancy towards family units on the new estate.

Furthermore, the redevelopment of Green Man Lane Estate is due to take place in phases, with completion in about 10 years. The proposal includes the eventual introduction of a dedicated GMLE Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) which will be managed by Ealing Council using traffic wardens. However, no decision has been taken on the introduction of parking controls and A2Dominion who will manage the new estate have suggested that, rather than pushing for a CPZ on the estate at the start of construction, they would initially favour outsourcing interim control to one of their "trusted" private security/clamping firms.

Commenting on the parking proposals, Dave Randles who lives in neighbouring Felix Road said: "It is inevitable that the introduction of any kind of parking restrictions within the new estate will have a huge and immediate knock-on effect in our streets which are already heaving with traffic. I hope residents will support me in my campaign against these outrageous parking proposals. With your help, it is very hard to see how A2Dominion and Ealing Council can continue to ignore the views of local people living in roads around the development."
