Real Action on Crime8.55.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sun 15th Jul 2007
Local Liberal Democrat councillors are fighting for action on crime in Ealing and Southall. They have produced a five point plan to cut crime which will be discussed by Ealing Council next week. The "Five steps to make our area safer" plan calls for action to tackle rising crime. Local anti-crime campaigner Nigel Bakhai has welcomed the move. He said, "Labour talk tough on crime, but their failure is clear to see on the streets of Ealing and Southall. They have run out of ideas. "The Liberal Democrats want to take back our streets for local people." The Liberal Democrat plans include proposals to put more police on patrol locally, especially after dark. A recent survey showed that most local people do not feel safe going out after dark in our area. Other proposals include giving local communities more power to close pubs and clubs that cause trouble. Nigel Bakhai also wants to introduce a new fund for victims of crime - paid for by prisoners' work. Nigel Bakhai said, "Local people are fed up with crime and the Government's failure to do anything about it. As our next local MP, I will make cutting crime my top priority."
