Ludford Re-elected2.31.55pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 10th Jun 2009
Ealing Lib Dems would like to thank voters who helped to secure the re-election of Lib Dem MEP Sarah Ludford in the Euro elections on June 4th. Overall, the Lib Dems picked up one extra seat in the European Parliament and now have MEPs representing every region in England and Scotland, only narrowly missing out on a seat in Wales. This follows on from an excellent set of local election results held on the same day, nationally beating Labour into third place and achieving a record high 28 per cent share of the vote. In particular, the Lib Dems gained control in Bristol and become the largest party on the new Bedford Council. Nigel Bakhai, who was a list candidate for the Lib Dems in London at the last European elections in 2004, said: "On behalf of our lib Dem MEP Sarah Ludford, I would like to thank Lib Dem voters in Ealing for their wonderful support in her successful re-election. The main news from the European and local election results may have been the disastrous showing for Gordon Brown's Labour Government but nonetheless the Lib Dems showed good progress up and down the country, picking up seats from both Labour and Conservatives."
